Bed linens
Most Marimekko bed linens are made from soft cotton but, from time to time, we also have bedding made of linen and sateen. All these materials will remain beautiful for a long time when properly cared for. Make sure to check the care label for exact instructions.
- Washing : Please wash your bed linens at the given washing temperature to keep colors bright and avoid color bleeding. We recommend using detergents made for colored laundry and without whiteners or brighteners. Before using your bed linens for the first time, we recommend washing them with plenty of water to wash away any extra dye that may come off.
- No soaking : Please do not soak bed linens. Remove your laundry promptly from the washing machine after the washing cycle has completed.
Ceramics
The playful and practical Oiva (superb) dishes are made from vitro porcelain, a high-fired and high-class material. Thanks to the high firing temperature, the surface of vitro porcelain is impenetrable to liquids and foodstuff.
- About proofness : The dishes are dishwasher, oven, microwave oven and freezer proof. We recommend avoiding drastic temperature changes, as this may cause dishes to break if chipped. Please bear in mind that the Oiva dishes are not suitable for cooking food on the stovetop.
- When to wash by hand : Naturally, products which contain wooden or leather details are not suitable for dishwashers, or ovens, and should be washed by hand.
Fabrics
Marimekko fabrics are printed in Helsinki, Finland, using either the flatbed or rotary printing methods. Please note that the fabric reports can deviate from the stated +/- 3% and the changes in size are dependent on the quality of the fabric. Our fabrics are 145 to 150 cm wide.
- About fabric reports : When printing large-scale patterns with the flatbed printing method, a so called ‘report line’ is left on the ends of the design. The report line shows in various ways, depending on the colors and pattern of the fabric. This is what gives the fabric its unique look – the report line is not a flaw, but characteristic of the printing method, and can also be used as an effect.
- Washing : We recommend a washing temperature of 60 degrees Celsius for almost all of our printed fabrics. For our coated fabrics and pigment-printed fabrics, select a delicate program and a washing temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. Always check the washing instructions for each material. For an ideal outcome, we recommend washing about five meters of fabric in a washing machine with a capacity of 6–7 kilos.
- Oeko-Tex : Most Marimekko fabrics that are printed in Helsinki have the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate. It certifies that the materials in question have been tested by an independent third party and are free from harmful substances (according to the standard’s criteria). Our bed linens, terry cloth products, and most clothing fabrics and knits also carry the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate.
- Batiste : Batiste fabric, with its fine cotton thread and plain weave, is ideal for curtains thanks to its light weight and transparency.
- Coated fabrics : Our coated cotton fabrics have either a phthalate-free PVC or acrylic coating. We recommend washing coated cotton fabrics with plenty of water and ironing on the reverse side.
- Cotton : Our home selection offers cotton and heavyweight cotton, both with a plain weave. An optimal choice for curtains, tablecloths and cushion covers, and for clothing, too.
- Linen : Breathable and strong by its nature, linen is an ideal material for home decor as well as for clothing. Please keep in mind that this fabric wrinkles easily.
- Sateen : Cotton sateen is known for its smooth surface and beautiful sheen that is achieved with a special weave structure. The sheen is best preserved by ironing the fabric after washing.
Glassware
Marimekko’s beautiful glasses, pitchers, vases and candle holders are mouth blown into a mold. Being made by hand, they may contain occasional air bubbles and small streaks.
- Keep it cool : The Sukat makkaralla (socks rolled down) glasses and pitchers are made for cool drinks – they cannot withstand boiling liquids.
- Washing : Our glasses are dishwasher-proof. After drinking milk beverages, we recommend rinsing the glasses with cold water before washing to avoid residue stains. Please position glasses loosely in the dishwasher to prevent them from scratching. Do not stack glasses while still warm as they then may stick together and break. We do recommend washing pitchers by hand due to their shape and size. The Marimekko vases and candle holders should also be washed by hand. The metal top of the candle holder is removable.
Oven mitts & pott holders
Marimekko oven mitts and potholders are meant to protect the user from hot kitchenware. Please follow these instructions carefully when using our oven mitts and potholders.
- Taking precautions : Please avoid using the product when it is damp as this weakens its thermal insulation capacity. Avoid contact with oven heating elements and open flame. The maximum touch temperature for the product is 250 degrees Celsius.
- Standards & regulations : Our oven mitts have been type-examined in accordance with standard EN407:2004. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health has EU type-examined the products according to PPE regulation (EU) 2016/425. Information on the regulation standard insurance is available from the links below.
Placemats
The cheerful Marimekko placemats are made of printed cotton coated with phthalate-free PVC. Always check the product information for exact care instructions for each item. Our placemats are meant for indoor use only.
- Cleaning : We recommend removing food and other stains right away, as the surface of the placemats is porous and can absorb stains. Wipe your placemat clean with a damp cloth. A mild detergent can be used when necessary.
- No soaking : Our placemats should not be soaked or cleaned under running water. The placemats cannot withstand machine washing. If the product gets wet, water may seep in between the fabric and the coating, which may cause the colors to bleed.
- About acrylic coating : We also have acrylic-coated placemats that can withstand machine washing. Just like the PVC coated placemats, these too can be wiped clean with a damp cloth and using a mild detergent.
Terry cloth products
Marimekko’s cozy home collection features terry towels, bathrobes and slippers. Most of our terry items are manufactured by weaving, and their surface is made up of loops.
- About runs and loops : It is typical of woven terry items to form runs or elongated loops, when a loop gets caught on something sharp or rough causing the threads to move in the fabric. If this happens, avoid pulling the loop longer: instead you can cut it short without the fabric coming undone.
- Washing : Please wash your terry items before using them for the first time. These products are best washed in a full washing machine with similar colors and at the correct temperature. We recommend using detergents meant for colored laundry and without whiteners or optical brighteners.
Trays & cutting boards
The multi-purpose Marimekko trays are made from melamine-coated birch veneer. Our cutting boards are made from melamine-coated high-density fiberboard (HDF).
- Cleaning : We recommend wiping your cutting board clean with a damp cloth or washing it by hand. Please do not soak. All our trays are machine-washable.
- Cutting boards – pot coasters : Our cutting boards may also be used as pot coasters since they can withstand temperatures of up to 170 degrees Celsius.
Wooden products
The special wooden details on Marimekko products need consistent care to stay beautiful and in good condition.
- Washing : Always wash your wooden items quickly by hand and dry thoroughly. Please remember that wooden products cannot withstand soaking.
- It’s all about oil : As wood dries, it begins to crack. Therefore, we recommend treating wooden products with light-colored olive oil whenever they start to feel dry or lose their sheen. Let the oil absorb into the wood overnight. If necessary, repeat the treatment the next day.
